articles / installing a gas unit fireplace

Green Mountain Masonry is located in Rutland, VT. We do fireplaces and chimneys, veneers, walls and barbeques of brick, stone and block as well as expert repairs and restoration.

A client recently called me whose 40-yr-old fireplace had lit her house on fire. Instead of rebuilding the old one she wondered if one of those new zero-clearance gas fireplaces could be installed. Since the old steel heatilator had to be taken out anyway, I thought we might be able to install a gas unit in its place.

We had to tear everything out inside-including the hearth, the masonry shell with the new and the chimney. We took care to make sure that everything else around the existing structure was in good shape. We selected a Vermont Castings model LHECDV30 with a 30 opening and remote control. A very nice unit that puts out a nice amount of heat.

We put a kind of Federal-style mantle to complete the job, and we rebuilt the chimney.
